Gasnier to sign on with France this week

Dragons skipper Mark Gasnier will reportedly finalise his contract with French rugby club Staid Francais on Wednesday, leaving the NRL for a $1 million deal.

Gasnier, who has played down ongoing speculation about a move to France for months, is now tipped to officially follow Penrith pair Craig Gower and Luke Rooney to French rugby this week.

He will sign a two-year deal, worth $500,000 a season, according to the Sunday Telegraph.

Kangaroos coach Ricky Stuart said Gasnier’s move will be a great loss for rugby league, and ruins the centre’s chances of becoming a leader at representative level for New South Wales or Australia.

"I've been a big supporter of Gaz, and that will always be the case,'' Stuart told the Telegraph.

"But what a waste and a shame in regards to the development of him becoming an integral member of the representative fixtures.

"I'm not neglecting the right of a player to make the most out of the game as possible, but with Danny Buderus' departure to the UK and as Darren Lockyer comes towards the back end of his career, Gaz is sitting on the cusp of a real opportunity.''

13/07/2008 5:55:41 AM All I can say is dump Doust, he obviously does not have any idea about contracts, and when does a 1 month window stretch into several months anyway? Maybe Josh Morris can break his contract and stay, as it appears to be that I contract means nothing these days. Posted by: OUST DOUST, Sydney, Australia Reply

Fancy including an exit clause in Gaz's contract?
What was he thinking...did he even know it was there?
Another shifty from the Mimis handbook of sports rorts.
