AUDIO - A sad day but a new challenge: Menzies

Manly veteran Steve Menzies today confirmed a Super League swansong after agreeing to a one-year deal with Bradford for next season.

Menzies will join the Bulls after completing his 16th season in the NRL, his stint including 13 years with Manly sandwiched around three seasons with the shortlived Northern Eagles franchise.

"It's a sad time I suppose having played my whole career here, but obviously it's a new challenge for me and definitely one I'm looking forward to," Menzies said.

"I'm happy with the way everything's gone, my time at Manly I wouldn't give that away for anything.

"I don't think it's really dawned on me, it didn't really hit me till I saw the media attention and the people that turned up here today.

"It got to me a little bit."

The 15-Test veteran made his first grade debut in 1993, and made a name for himself as the games's most prolific try-scoring forward.

His 338 first grade games is second only to Terry Lamb (349) for most first grade games ever played, while he trails only Ken Irvine (212) for most tries, having crossed the stripe on 171 occasions.

It's a sad time I suppose having played my whole career here, but obviously it's a new challenge for me... Manly legend Stave Menzies on leaving the club

17/07/2008 6:22:30 AM Congratulations on a distinguished career Steve Menzies. You are a true legend of the game. I hate manly, but have always enjoyed watching Steve Menzies. Best of luck for the future. Posted by: Brenden Fing, Elizabeth Bay, Australia Reply

17/07/2008 6:33:35 AM Steve Menzies is a huge loss to Rugby League in this country. He has been an ornament to the game and has been a great role model for our young players to follow. What a shame to lose such a great ambassador of Rugby League and how the game should be played, hard but fair, these are things that are sadly lacking in the game today. Another nail in the NRL coffin, good work again boys when are you going to wake up and realise we have to keep these types of players here in Australia. 17/07/2008 7:24:19 PM Being a huge Manly fan it is going to be tough watching the eagles go round from next and not having Steve Menzies in the team. For 16 years he has been a great player to watch whether you love or hate the eagles. His defence can bruise the opposition and his attacking ability is prolific let alone his ability to sniff out a try. The complete footballer who is a rare role mode in the modern game. You will be missed but you dont owe Manly anything Beaver as you have given them so much already. Posted by: Adam Bannon, London, Australia Reply

25/07/2008 3:09:30 AM When Steve Menzies plays his last game @ Brookvale in a few months he should be carried around the crowd on the shoulders of both teams. Adore him as we Manly fans rightly do, Menzies is an icon for Rugby League, not just Manly.Indeed @ Penrith with the last round this should occur.
Clearly the same should apply for Lockyer and El Masri when they finish.
Indeed for El Masri it is socially and politically important; the NRL should have the wisdom to make sure this happens. Posted by: Steve Edwards, Narrabben, Australia Reply
