Blocker's Blow Up (and isn't it a beauty)

Steve Roach | rugbyleaguelive.com | 06/08/08 | 0

You know what I love most about rugby league?

It's not the money-hungry stars who sell their soul to the highest bidder.

It's not grubby little halfwits who get out on the drink and do wee-wees on their mate's legs.

And it's definitely not myths like Khoder Nasser.

So what do I love most? I love the game!

We've been lambasted with this dribble about the game being in crisis. On last week's Channel Nine 'Footy Show', they even held 'crisis talks' about the state of the code.

Channel Nine - a word of advice. You don't need the ‘Knights of the Round Table’ to gather in front of a camera to tell you what's wrong. I can tell you what's wrong. Every punter with a frontal lobe can tell you what's wrong.

The game is in crisis because you lot keep publically bagging it!

Our fans are hurting. People like you and me, the punters - we're flicking on the tube and getting our daily 6 o'clock television equivalent of a dangerous throw.

We can't put down a paper or turn off the news without having a sour taste in our mouths.

I don't care if Todd Carney's step-sister's next-door-neighbour's maths teacher says Carney was ejected from a pub.

Sure, he probably shouldn't be out on the drink given his history - but the guy is a footy player. More than that, he's a kid.

Now, with an absolutely mouth-watering round of rugby league action on it's way - what's leading the back-page of the papers? Sonny Bill holding a Toulon jersey.

This is why our game is in 'crisis'. This is. Forget the bad wood and let's focus on what we all love - the game!

And what a great one we have to look forward to on Friday night! Competition front-runners Manly going up against the team most people are tipping will take the chocolates - Melbourne.

It's a grand-final replay and I'm itching in my jocks for this one to kick-off.

But it doesn't end there. The Dragons will host the Tigers - and despite their recent rich vein of from, the Dragons are still just two points clear of the ninth placed Tigers.

A loss on home soil could send their season into a tailspin, while a win should propel the mighty Tigers into the top half of the ladder with the finals looming.

The Sharks' hopes of a minor-premiership hinge on their clash against the Rabbitohs - these guys just don't give up, do they?

Bulldogs and Cowboys fans will be watching their match like a grand-final. The Dogs are four points clear, but a loss would leave the spoon looking like a very real prospect.

The Titans and Knights wrap up the round on Monday night - and, with both on 22 points - seasons are on the line.

I'm not going to brave any tips yet - but you'll get all of mine (and Brohman's if anyone cares) on Friday arvo, right here at rugbyleaguelive.com.

6/08/2008 3:58:47 AM Blocker, you are a legend.

Telling it how it exactly is.

6 weeks ago, the same mob were saying that the game was going well in centenary year, crowds strong, etc... we have one bloke 'break the law' and defect and all of a sudden the game is in crisis.

SBW hardly ever plays anyway so noone will miss him.

keep up the good work. Posted by: Pete M, Hunter, Australia Reply

6/08/2008 5:24:26 AM Too bloody right Blocker! I have had enough of all this Bad publicity. These players cant scratch there you know whats without everybody whingeing! No wonder they want to go to France. I love this game, lets promote it not bag it. And please, can we finish with this SBW saga, he no longer represents our game thank god so lets be done with it. He's a Ra Ra now, too bad for him i say!! Posted by: Master Sharky, Cetral Coast, Australia Reply

6/08/2008 5:54:52 AM Well said blocker the game has to move on this game is bigger then anyone.
also i like some of andrew moore's stories but PLEASE andrew enough with the SBW mate
your over doing it i come onto RBL to watch reports and every video you do has you talking about SBW makes you look just as stupid as the rest GIVE IT A BREAK.
lets get on with the game and the guys that are here playing week to week and focus on the good things in sort and stop wasting time with the losers.

again well said blocker Posted by: Eels Hope, sYDNEY, Australia Reply

6/08/2008 6:25:05 AM That has been the best article I have seen in the last 6 weeks. All jokes aside Danny Weider is a joke and for the first time I have a bad taste in my mouth when ever I turn on the channel 9 news and particular League supporting papers. That's the problem, no one but the media is doing damage to the game. If you keep on telling everyone a codes in crisis sooner or later people will start believing the rubbish. Did'nt the SOO just break ratings records. Posted by: John Smith, Sydney, Australia Reply

6/08/2008 8:58:09 AM Finally someone else has said what I have been thinking!! A week before SBW departure, the game was in crisis because kicks on the 5th were boring! That got commentry on the Thurday night show, the Friday night footy, both the Sunday shows and Sunday footy! I often sit back and wonder what Gould, Voss and M.Johns will tell us is wrong this week.
