Rugby set to pounce on Billy Slater

Rugby Union scouts have set their sights on another NRL talent, and this time they're gunning for the best in the business.

With reports revealing Billy Slater has a Gasnier-style clause in his contract with the Melbourne Storm which allows him to negotiate other offers in a window at the end of next season, union officials have started to circle.

Recently announced as the world's best player at the RLIF awards, Slater would be an ultra attractive option for union clubs – the fullback’s unmatched speed, vision and support-play all skills which transcend codes.

An Innisfail boy, Slater's obvious choice would be the Reds, and Queensland high-performance manager Ben Whitaker admits the Super 14 club is keen to open discussions.

"I think he's one of those players that any code would definitely explore or have a look at having on board," Whitaker told News Ltd.

"He would be fantastic.

"But they have to have a genuine desire to play the game. You do know playing our game can result in great financial rewards.

"We would definitely want to gauge pretty early whether he has an interest in playing the game. If it's just about upping his salary, we don't need that."

The expression of interest arrives with revelations Melbourne captain Cameron Smith has received a massive offer from the Gold Coast. Storm officials have put the contract negotiations of all players on hold until Smith's dealing are out of the way.

He would be fantastic... Queensland high-performance manager Ben Whitaker
