During his prime, Steve Roach was one of the toughest and most damaging prop forwards in the game. Forming a lethal combination with teammate Paul Sironen, the pair led the Balmain pack for most of the 1980's and early 90's.
'Blocker' was signed by the Tigers in 1982 and remained with the club for 185 top grade games.
His graduation to first grade was quick, and by 1983 was an integral part of the Balmain side which made the semi-finals - the first time in six years.
Roach played in a golden era for the club alongside some of the best names in the game including Benny Elias, Ellery Hanley, Gary Jack and Sironen.
But despite their abundance of talent, the Tigers were unable to secure a premiership from two grand final appearances.
Contrary to popular belief, Blocker's contract at Leichhardt consisted of match payments – not meal vouchers.
